Redeye

Image
What is a “redeye”?   A redeye is a plane flight that flies during most of the hours that people are sleeping. I’ve been traveling a lot this year and decided that I would consider doing redeye flights since I don’t sleep well anyway before I fly.   In theory, it sounded like the way to go!   As I considered this way of travel, I set out to schedule my next travel this way and a part of me felt ‘genius’!   Here’s what happened... My first redeye was from Honolulu to Oregon with a short layover in California.   Went well, had a ride home from the airport—uneventful. Three days laterI was flying from Oregon to Massachusetts.  Did you know that parents in the North West already have this genius way of travel figured out?   Which means on my redeye flight out of Oregon the majority of passengers were kids.   Anyone who knows me knows I Love Kids!   Just not on this flight.    They were yawning, crabby, and sme...

Train

Image
When I said I would take the train to Rockport I had no idea what a spoiled brat I am!   My usual is renting cars, taking a Lyft, an Uber and/or friends and family willing to shuttle me to and from the airport etc. Don’t get me wrong, I highly recommend anyone take the train from Boston Logan Airport to Rockport, MA.   It’s one of the most beautiful rides on a train you may ever see on the East Coast. First of all, I downloaded directions online to get me to the train station, but nothing prepared me for the lack-of-signage.   I do not take public transportation in my daily life.   When I read the instructions that said, get on the bus headed to North Station…well, it doesn’t say North Station—it says something else.   So, I blindly followed another lost individual onto a bus that looked like it might be going the right way.   And yes it was.   It stopped at the Subway terminal.   I asked the bus driver how to get to North Station. ...

The Good Morning Moving Story

Image
I've been up since 5:34 am, stacking boxes in places to go thru them later. Humph. I’m trying not to feel anger towards them and then I recognize I have the power to change my attitude.   Suddenly a warmth comes over me, I begin to become thankful about all the 'stuff' that has accumulated over the years. After the gratitude becomes an actual feeling, my thoughts are clear. And 'truth' questions appear. We moved most this 'stuff' to Cali and didn't open the box.   The storage unit here has boxes that haven't been opened in 3-6 years. “What are we hanging onto?”, I ask myself? We live great and have been living great without them. Again, I ask, “what are we holding on to?” To this question,  I do not have an answer.   “It's OK not to know”, I say. That feels good. I begin to repeat, “Today is a beautiful day full off gratitude, laughter, joy and sunshine. Simplify, recondition, and purge! “.   I open the doors and the fresh air from ...

Setting Yourself Up For Failure

Image
What a beautiful way to set yourself up for Failure...   Books are near impossible to live up to!   I started when I was 19 going to seminars and reading positive   & ‘self-help’ books,.   What the seminars and books had forgotten to tell me that if I followed through with every word they teach, I could possibly walk on water! “Think positive and you can achieve anything you set your mind to!”   By the way, that’s complete bullshit!   “Believe it and you’ll achieve it”—missing something!   Think it ALL you wish, if you don’t create ACTION, it ain’t going to happen. (Yes, I typed ain’t!) None the less, below is some pretty great stuff. I had it plastered all over my walls and my refrigerator for years and I miss it sometimes. Below are a few of my favorite quotes from some authors I’ve admired and/or who have inspired parts of my life to what it is today.   I’ve also included some book recommendations that will be worth your ti...

Attitude

Image
Attitude is Everything! Sick of hearing it?   Me too, until a particular moment. A moment several years ago when a high school student was in my “Key Club”.   For those of you that don’t know what Key Club is, it’s run by your local Kiwanis Chapter for High School Students.   Students volunteer for many projects and the chapter I was involved in was focused on helping kids with cancer, leukemia, etc.   We’d go to OHSU in Oregon every year for a talk/presentation to explain what the money was used for that we were raising.   It was a sad experience to hear the youngsters' stories and their families who were living with dis-ease.    Yet, every year, I’d get back into the car with six (6) students who’d ride with me and I’d ask, “Would anyone like to share what today meant to them?”   Every year, one student would have an ‘ah-ha’ moment and it would forever change their life in a positive direction.    One year a soph...

Real

Image
Now that I’m a writer n’all, my intention is to bring inspiring stories to the world of regular, ordinary people who have something they’d like to share, even some ‘real’ stories of my own. My hope is to change some lives, and maybe (if I may be so bold), to save a life or two along the way. My story isn’t glamorous to me and my feelings are that it’s full of much disappointment and failure. To some it’s full of many successes and inspiration. We all are our own worst critics. Let me share that as soon as I would begin to experience success, I’d walk away or sabotage it in some way — over n over n over again! Bottom line, I didn’t feel I deserved success, and to top it off, I felt if I had too much success, I’d have no more friends (divorce cures this). I’d be looked at through a magnifying glass (grown children cover this), judged and re-judged (society does this). Feeding in to societies BS, I have been afraid to share me, and more afraid to ‘be’ me. ...

Dreamer

Image
Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Writing…being a writer, has been a dream of mine since I was old enough to be asked, “What do you do for a living?” I have always wanted to say, I’m a writer, or, I’m an author, or I’m a journalist — I interview people for a living. I love hearing peoples stories, history, ambitions, sorrows, happiness, I love it all. My belief is, everyone has an inspirational story that will impact someone else’s life for the better - a life lesson if you will. For example, I’ve spent the last 7 years in and out of people’s homes selling home improvements (boy, do I regret not writing their stories down!). The best information I discovered, was how to live a quality life and be ‘old’ at the same time. Really old! Like 98 and 101! A quality life has three things in common: 1) relaxation/low-key attitude 2) a glass of red wine or two a day/no more than that 3) golf. You’d think after gathering this information over the years, I’...
